Surgical Skill, Close to Home
Some surgeries are planned in advance. Others become urgent quickly. Our team is equipped to handle a wide range of procedures, from routine surgeries to more advanced soft tissue cases that require careful planning and experienced hands.
Because of our veterinarians’ surgical backgrounds, we commonly see referral cases from other clinics for emergency and advanced procedures. We also work with a mobile surgeon for orthopedic cases, allowing us to support pets with more complex bone, joint, or ligament concerns when needed.
When Might My Pet Need Surgery?
Surgery may be recommended to treat illness, relieve pain, repair an injury, remove diseased tissue, or prevent a condition from becoming more serious. Your pet may need surgical care for a range of reasons, including a mass, infection, bladder stones, reproductive disease, an intestinal blockage, eyelid abnormality, wound, or urgent abdominal concern.
Before recommending surgery, our veterinarians will examine your pet, review their medical history, discuss diagnostic findings, and explain the available treatment options. We want you to understand why surgery is being recommended, what the procedure involves, and what recovery may look like.
Soft Tissue Procedures
East York Animal Clinic provides advanced soft tissue surgery for dogs and cats, including planned and urgent procedures involving the airway, eyes, abdomen, urinary tract, skin, and internal tissues.
Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)
Flat-faced breeds may struggle with breathing because of airway changes such as narrowed nostrils or an elongated soft palate. BOAS surgery may help improve airflow, reduce breathing effort, and support better daily comfort.
Ocular Surgery
Eye and eyelid conditions can cause irritation, tearing, squinting, and discomfort. We provide surgical care for cherry eye, entropion, ectropion, eyelid masses, and other eyelid abnormalities to help protect the eye and improve comfort.
Abdominal Surgery
Abdominal surgery may be needed for urgent or complex conditions affecting the internal organs. Our team performs procedures such as pyometra surgery, cystotomy for bladder stones, gastrointestinal foreign body removal, intestinal obstruction surgery, and select mass removals.
Perineal Urethrostomy (PU)
For male cats who have severe or chronic urinary issues, a perineal urethrostomy procedure can restore their comfort and urinary health, allowing them to urinate without life-threatening obstructions.
Orthopedic Procedures
East York Animal Clinic works with a mobile orthopedic surgeon for pets who need advanced bone, joint, or ligament procedures.
TPLO Surgery
TPLO surgery is commonly recommended for dogs with cranial cruciate ligament injuries. This procedure helps stabilize the knee, reduce pain, and support better mobility.
Fracture Repair
Fracture repair helps realign and stabilize broken bones so they can heal properly. Depending on the injury, treatment may involve plates, pins, screws, or other stabilization methods.
Hip Dysplasia Surgery
Hip dysplasia can cause pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. When surgery is recommended, our team can help coordinate care and guide you through treatment and recovery.
Before and After Pet Surgery
Your pet’s safety guides every step of their surgical plan. Before surgery, we may recommend an exam, bloodwork, diagnostic testing, or imaging based on your pet’s age, health, and procedure. We’ll also review anesthesia, pain management, fasting instructions, recovery expectations, and home care so you know what to expect.
After surgery, your pet will be monitored as they wake up from anesthesia. When they are ready to go home, we’ll walk you through medications, feeding, activity restriction, incision care, recheck needs, and signs to watch for during healing.
